Diabetes Management

Diabetes can lead to decreased sensation (peripheral neuropathy) and reduced blood supply (poor circulation). The poorer the diabetes control , the more likely there will be complications due to diabetes.

A six monthly foot assessment by one of our podiatrists will help to detect any changes early — before they become a problem.

Our diabetes assessment involves checking your foot pulses and examining sensation by testing reflexes, vibration and pressure sensitivity.  Your podiatrist will also look for general foot conditions that may lead to future problems. We will work with you to show you how to monitor your own feet, in between consultations.

We will work closely with your GP, diabetes educator, dietitian and other relevant diabetes specialist to ensure we care for your feet and keep them health and in good state.

  • Cut or file your toenails regularly ideally by us for proper long term management.

  • Seek treatment from our podiatry team if foot blisters or injuries do not heal quickly.
  • Treat ulcers urgently, within 24 hours, especially if there is redness or swelling around the area, or in an area where you’ve previously been warned to seek immediate attention.
